This is the one that keeps you out of trouble.<\/li><li><code>ugc<\/code> \u2014 the link came from a comment, a forum post, a user profile. Anything a visitor wrote.<\/li><li><code>nofollow<\/code> \u2014 the catch-all. Still valid, still understood, and still the right choice when you want to reference something without vouching for it.<\/li><\/ul><p>They can be combined: <code>rel=\"sponsored nofollow\"<\/code> is legitimate and common on affiliate links. Since 2019 all three are treated as hints, which means a search engine may still follow the link for discovery \u2014 it simply will not treat it as an endorsement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0800014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t0800014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why it does not work on internal links<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0800015 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t0800015\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is the single most persistent piece of outdated advice in internal linking, so it is worth being precise about.<\/p><p>The technique was called <strong>PageRank sculpting<\/strong>. The theory: a page divides its value among its outgoing links, so if you nofollow the links to unimportant pages \u2014 login, cart, terms \u2014 the remaining links each carry a larger share. For a few years that was true.<\/p><p>In June 2009 Google changed how it counts. A nofollowed link still <em>consumes<\/em> its share of the page&#8217;s value; that share is then discarded rather than redistributed. Nofollowing five of ten links does not double what the other five carry. It throws half of it away.<\/p><p>The rule that follows is simple: <strong>if a page should not receive value, do not link to it.<\/strong> Remove the link, or exclude the page from the linking rules \u2014 do not decorate the link with an attribute and expect the flow to redirect itself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0800016 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t0800016\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What it does not do<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0800017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t0800017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It does not keep a page out of the index. That is what <code>noindex<\/code> is for, and the two are regularly confused. A nofollowed page can still be found and indexed through any other route \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/internal-links-manager.com\/pt\/glossario\/xml-sitemap\/\">sitemap<\/a>, an external link, a redirect.<\/p><p>It also does not block crawling. Only <code>robots.txt<\/code> does that, and blocking a URL there prevents a crawler from ever seeing the <code>noindex<\/code> on it \u2014 which is why the two instructions should not be combined on the same page.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f04680a ilm-article elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f04680a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-149b921\" data-id=\"149b921\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63da606 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"63da606\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What to use instead<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9b3aba0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9b3aba0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Every goal people reach for nofollow to achieve has a correct instrument.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Keep a page out of the index<\/strong> \u2192 <code>noindex<\/code> in a robots meta tag on that page.<\/li><li><strong>Stop a URL being fetched at all<\/strong> \u2192 <code>robots.txt<\/code>. Never combine it with <code>noindex<\/code>: a blocked URL cannot be read, so the noindex is never seen.<\/li><li><strong>Consolidate duplicate addresses<\/strong> \u2192 a <a href=\"https:\/\/internal-links-manager.com\/pt\/glossario\/canonical-tag\/\">canonical tag<\/a>, or a redirect if the old address should stop working.<\/li><li><strong>Stop a page receiving internal value<\/strong> \u2192 remove the links to it, or exclude it in whatever tool places them.<\/li><\/ul><p>Login pages, carts and checkout steps are the usual examples, and none of them need nofollow. Most are already noindexed by the software that generates them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-202f454 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"202f454\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Where it still earns its place<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-128fafc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"128fafc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Three cases, all of them external.<\/p><p><strong>Paid and affiliate links.<\/strong> Not optional \u2014 passing ranking value through a paid placement is a link scheme in Google&#8217;s terms, and <code>sponsored<\/code> is the correct marker.<\/p><p><strong>User-generated content.<\/strong> Comments, forum posts, profile fields. <code>ugc<\/code> exists precisely because you did not write these and cannot vouch for where they point.<\/p><p><strong>Citations you do not endorse.<\/strong> Quoting a source to disagree with it, or linking to something as evidence rather than as a recommendation.<\/p><p>Notice that all three concern <em>vouching<\/em>. That is the attribute&#8217;s actual meaning, and reading it that way makes most decisions obvious.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5f87e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f5f87e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Checking what your site actually sends<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b20e986 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b20e986\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Themes and plugins add these attributes without announcing it. A crawler will list every nofollowed link on the site \u2014 in Screaming Frog under <em>Bulk Exports \u203a Links \u203a All Outlinks<\/em>, filtered on the follow status.<\/p><p>What to look for: internal links carrying nofollow at all. Almost every instance is either a leftover from a sculpting attempt years ago or a plugin default nobody reviewed.
