A tracking parameter appended to a shared link. A session ID. A shop filter that produces <code>?colour=blue<\/code>. A printer-friendly version. The same product sitting in two categories. A trailing slash, or its absence.<\/p><p>To a search engine each of those is a separate URL that happens to serve identical content \u2014 and it has to decide which one to index. The canonical tag is how you answer that question instead of leaving it to be guessed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t1700014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">It is a hint, not an instruction<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700015 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t1700015\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Google treats <code>rel=canonical<\/code> as one signal among several, not as a command. Internal links, the sitemap, redirects and the tag itself are weighed together \u2014 and if they disagree, Google picks its own canonical and reports the difference in Search Console as <em>Alternate page with proper canonical tag<\/em> or, less happily, <em>Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user<\/em>.<\/p><p>The second message is nearly always a consistency problem: the page declares one canonical while every internal link and the sitemap point somewhere else. <strong>The tag alone does not outvote your own linking.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700016 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t1700016\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Rules that prevent most problems<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t1700017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Self-reference every page.<\/strong> A page whose canonical points at itself is the normal case, not a special one. Rank Math and Yoast do this automatically.<\/li><li><strong>Use absolute URLs.<\/strong> Relative canonicals are permitted and reliably misconfigured.<\/li><li><strong>Link the canonical, always.<\/strong> Every internal link, every sitemap entry, the same address the tag names.<\/li><li><strong>Do not chain them.<\/strong> A canonical pointing at a page whose canonical points somewhere else is ignored.<\/li><li><strong>Do not canonicalise paginated pages to page one.<\/strong> Page two is not a duplicate of page one; each should reference itself.<\/li><li><strong>Never combine it with <code>noindex<\/code> on the same URL.<\/strong> The two say contradictory things.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700018 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t1700018\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Canonical or redirect?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t1700019 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t1700019\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The distinction is whether visitors still need the other URL. If nobody should land on the old address any more, use a <a href=\"https:\/\/internal-links-manager.com\/en\/glossary\/redirect-chain\/\">301 redirect<\/a> \u2014 it is stronger and unambiguous. The URL is a duplicate, it declares the correct canonical, and Google agreed. No action needed \u2014 this line frightens people unnecessarily.<\/p><p><strong>Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user.<\/strong> A real disagreement. Google found stronger signals pointing elsewhere, and almost always those signals are your own internal links and sitemap contradicting the tag.<\/p><p><strong>Duplicate without user-selected canonical.<\/strong> No tag at all, so Google picked one. Usually parameter URLs on a site that never configured canonicals.<\/p><p>The second is the only one worth investigating, and the investigation is short: check which URL your links actually point at.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-744f90f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"744f90f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cross-domain canonicals<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5304fce elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5304fce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A canonical may point at another domain. This is the correct mechanism for syndicated content: a partner republishing your article sets its canonical to your original, so the credit stays with you.<\/p><p>It works only if the receiving site cooperates, which is a contractual matter rather than a technical one. Where they will not, the fallback is a visible attribution link back to the original \u2014 weaker, but at least honest about the relationship.<\/p><p>The mirror-image mistake is worth naming: never set your own canonical to a page you do not control on the assumption it is \u201cthe main version\u201d. You are asking to be dropped from the index in favour of somebody else&#8217;s page.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa5e447 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fa5e447\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Canonicals and multilingual sites<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-215726c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"215726c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A frequent and damaging error: canonicalising every translation to the original-language page. The German version is not a duplicate of the English one \u2014 it is a different page for a different audience, and pointing its canonical at the English URL removes it from the index entirely.<\/p><p><strong>Each language version canonicalises to itself<\/strong>, and <code>hreflang<\/code> annotations describe the relationship between them.
