Click depth is the number of clicks it takes to reach a page from the homepage, following the shortest available path of links.<\/p>

Lower is better. Shallow pages are crawled more often and inherit more link equity<\/a>. The two get confused constantly. \/a\/b\/c\/d\/page\/<\/code> has five folders in the URL but may sit one click from the homepage if something on the front page links to it. Conversely a URL like \/offer\/<\/code> looks shallow and can be six clicks away if the only route runs through a paginated archive.<\/p>

Search engines follow links, not slashes. Restructuring URLs to look shallower changes nothing; adding a link<\/a> does.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The common rule of thumb is three clicks. Treat it as a heuristic rather than a threshold \u2014 nothing breaks at four. What is reliably true is the direction: each additional level means less frequent crawling and a smaller inherited share.<\/p>

A workable target for most sites: every page you want to rank within three clicks, everything else within five.<\/strong> Anything beyond that should be there on purpose. Pages reachable only through page seven of a paginated archive are the classic case \u2014 technically not orphaned<\/a>, but close enough to be treated the same way.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Any crawler that starts at the homepage reports it \u2014 Screaming Frog calls the column Crawl Depth<\/em>, Sitebulb shows the distribution as a chart. Sort descending and look at what sits at the bottom.<\/p>

The fix is almost never a navigation change. Adding menu entries makes every page heavier and dilutes the links that already exist. The cheaper move is a handful of contextual links<\/a> from well-linked pages: one link from a page at depth one puts the target at depth two immediately.<\/p>

Hub pages work for the same reason. A single well-placed overview that links thirty deep pages lifts all thirty at once \u2014 which is what a topic cluster<\/a> does structurally.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Why pagination is the usual culprit<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On most content sites the deepest pages are old blog posts, and the reason is arithmetic. A blog listing ten posts per page puts post number sixty on page six. If the pagination only links to adjacent pages \u2014 previous, next, and a couple of numbers \u2014 reaching page six takes several clicks, and everything on it inherits that depth.<\/p>

Shops have the same problem in a different shape: a product on page eleven of a category listing is functionally buried, even though the category page itself sits one click from the homepage.<\/p>

Widening the pagination helps a little. Linking the good older posts from somewhere that is not a listing helps considerably more.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Click depth measures the shortest path, not the number of links. A page one click from the homepage because it sits in the main menu is shallow but may receive only that one link. A page three clicks out with forty inbound contextual links<\/a> from relevant articles is deeper and stronger.<\/p>

So depth is a useful diagnostic and a poor target on its own. Read it alongside the count of inbound internal links; the pages that are both deep and rarely linked are the ones that need attention, and the pages that are deep but heavily linked usually do not.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Since Google indexes the mobile version of a page, the mobile navigation is the one that determines depth. A desktop mega-menu exposing sixty category links means nothing if the mobile menu shows six and loads the rest through JavaScript with no href<\/code> behind them.<\/p>

Worth checking directly: open a page on a phone-sized viewport, view the source, and count the links actually present in the HTML.
