That is precisely why it distinguishes nothing between pages \u2014 it carries no information about the page it sits on. A link inside a sentence carries two extra pieces of information: somebody chose it, and the surrounding words say what it is for.<\/p><p>Search engines have long treated boilerplate and body content differently for exactly this reason. So do readers: a link in the third paragraph gets clicked; a link in a \u201cyou may also like\u201d strip below the fold mostly does not.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0400014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t0400014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What makes one good<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0400015 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t0400015\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>It sits where the question arises.<\/strong> If a sentence mentions a term the reader may not know, the link belongs on that sentence \u2014 not in a summary box afterwards. A link is an answer, and answers are worth less late.<\/li><li><strong>It would survive the sentence being rewritten.<\/strong> If the words only exist to carry the link, the link is decoration.<\/li><li><strong>It does not stack.<\/strong> Two or three links in one sentence read as noise and none get followed.<\/li><li><strong>It appears once per target.<\/strong> The first link to a page is the one that counts; the fourth costs attention and gains nothing.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0400016 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"t0400016\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can they be automated?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-t0400017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"t0400017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Partly, and the qualifier matters. A rule that replaces every occurrence of a term everywhere with the same anchor produces uniformity and density in one step \u2014 the two things that make automated linking obvious. A rule that starts from the third occurrence, caps how many links a page may receive and holds several phrasings per target produces something a reader cannot distinguish from hand work.<\/p><p>The judgement stays human either way. Not because of a rule in an algorithm, but because that is where readers actually are.<\/p><p>One qualification worth making: the very first paragraph is usually the worst place for a link, even though it is the highest. A reader who has not yet committed to the page will leave through it. This is why a threshold that starts linking from the second or third occurrence of a term produces better results than one that fires on the first \u2014 by then the reader is invested, and the link reads as a next step rather than an exit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c81af0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9c81af0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How many a page can carry<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efd3be8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efd3be8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Two to five contextual links per thousand words is a defensible working figure for editorial content \u2014 enough to build a real structure, few enough that each reads as deliberate. Reference pages can carry more; a short landing page should carry fewer.<\/p><p>The symptom of going too far is not a penalty, it is a reading problem. If a paragraph has more coloured text than black, people stop reading and start scanning for what to skip. And the same target appearing four times on one page adds nothing: the first link is the one that counts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d4f96c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5d4f96c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why most sites have almost none<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-86fe39a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"86fe39a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A long article with a full menu, a full footer and not one link in the prose is the normal case on the web, not the exception. The reason is structural rather than editorial: template links are placed once by a developer and appear everywhere, while contextual links have to be placed by a writer, one at a time, on every page, forever.<\/p><p>That asymmetry is why the count drifts towards zero as an archive grows.
