elementor-size-default\">Why the archive is the opportunity<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bl000013 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bl000013\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Most people add internal links going forward: a new post links to two older ones, and that is it. The direction is backwards.<\/p><p>An older post that still receives traffic has something a new post does not \u2014 standing. It has been indexed for years, it has whatever backlinks it collected, and it gets crawled regularly. A link from there is worth more than a link from the post you published yesterday.<\/p><p>So the valuable move is the one nobody makes: going into the archive and linking <em>forward<\/em>, from the old posts to the new one. That is what does not happen, because it means opening two hundred posts and searching each one.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bl000014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bl000014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What that looks like with 200 articles<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bl000015 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bl000015\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Say you publish a thorough guide to a topic you have written around for years. Perhaps forty of your older posts mention the subject in passing. Each of those mentions is a place the guide belongs.<\/p><p>By hand: open forty posts, find the phrase, decide whether the sentence carries a link, write the anchor, save. Call it three minutes each if nothing goes wrong. Two hours, for one new page \u2014 and you will do it once, for the launch, and never again for the next one.<\/p><p>As a rule: define that the phrase points at the guide, set it to start from the second occurrence so introductions stay clean, cap it at one link per post. Done in a minute, applied to all forty, and applied again automatically to the posts you write next year.<\/p><p>The saving is real but it is not the main point. Not every post \u2014 if everything is a target, nothing collects anything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For each one, write down two or three phrasings<\/strong> you would naturally use when mentioning it. Not one keyword repeated: the exact term, a paraphrase, and a longer wording. This is what keeps the anchor list from reading like a template.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set the threshold to the second or third occurrence.<\/strong> The first mention of a term usually sits in the introduction, which is the worst place for a link \u2014 the reader has not committed yet, and a blue word in line two invites them to leave.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cap links per post.<\/strong> One or two per target. The first link to a page is the one that counts; the fourth costs attention and gains nothing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exclude what should stay clean.<\/strong> The about page, contact, anything legal, and \u2014 if you quote other people \u2014 blockquotes, so you never put a link inside someone else's words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read three posts afterwards.<\/strong> Actually read them, as a reader. If a link makes you stop, the threshold is too low or the anchor is wrong. This check takes five minutes and catches almost everything.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8ee763 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a8ee763\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The failure mode to avoid<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b91cea8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b91cea8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Automatic linking has a bad reputation and it is deserved, because the usual implementation replaces every occurrence of a word everywhere with the same anchor. The result is a blog where the phrase <em>sourdough starter<\/em> is blue two hundred times, identically, including in the introduction of every post.<\/p><p>That produces the two things search engines actually dislike \u2014 uniform anchors and excessive density \u2014 manufactured on purpose, at scale. It is worse than doing nothing.<\/p><p>Everything in the setup above exists to prevent exactly that: several phrasings per target, a threshold so introductions stay prose, and a cap so no post turns blue.
